About Telemark

The Telemark Tourist Office works in conjunction with Gea Norvegica Geopark to reveal the unique geology of our region. Gea Norvegica Geopark is a European Geopark linked to the UNESCO Global Network of Geoparks. We thoroughly recommend trips to explore the geology of Mølen, Kjærra, Kapitelberget, Mikaelshula, the Holla church ruins, Frierstien, Rognstranda and Jomfruland.

The development of modern industry in Norway started in Telemark. The power of the waterways was converted into electricity, and major process industries flourished along the industrial axis of Rjukan-Notodden-Porsgrunn.

Ever since the mid 19th Century, Telemark has played host to numerous artists and folklorists, attracted by the cultural traditions present locally and the significant interest in national traditions.

Morgedal is a tiny village nestled in the mountains of Western Telemark, set against a backdrop of picturesque forest-clad mountain ridges and slopes, which are decked in wild flowers in the summer and snow in the winter.

Henrik Ibsen was born in Skien on 20 March 1828. His father, Knud, was a merchant and distillery-owner. For many years, he was one of Skien’s highest taxpayers.
